800-year-old tombs found while digging for gas pipelines in Peru

Archaeologist Roberto Quispe, from the local gas distribution company Calidda, said the tombs were found underground in the Carabayllo district. Human remains, such as bones and skulls, were inside funerary bundles, he added.

Among other objects discovered last weekend, the researchers found a small statuette of a human figure, with large eyes and open arms as if welcoming, typical of the Chancay culture called “cuchimilco”.

The statuette served as inspiration to make the mascot for the Pan American Games that took place in Lima in 2019 and the medal winners in the games received a replica.

The discovery of ancient tombs during construction work is frequent in Peru, which is home to several pre-Hispanic cultures, mainly on the coast and in the Andes of the country. That is why it is normal for public service installation companies to have archaeologists among their workers.

“These people were buried with very interesting offerings, some with clay figurines, ceramics, possibly representing a female deity that accompanied these people in their death throes,” said archaeologist Cecilia Camargo, also from the Calidda company. .

The largest archaeological remains in Peru are the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu located in the Andes, in the Cusco region, and the mysterious Nazca lines, drawn in a coastal desert more than 1,500 years ago, in the Ica region.
