Last Saturday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro declared the country in a state of national emergency due to the landslides that occurred in the Guillén, El Reparto, Nueva Santa Rosa, Suazo Córdova and surrounding neighborhoods, located in the city of Tegucigalpa.
The Argentine mission -headed by the National Director of Planning and Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance, Mariana Galvani- was received today by the Argentine ambassador Pablo Vilas, after the Central American country accepted the offer made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cult headed by Santiago Cafiero.
Likewise, pills were sent from Argentina to make 11,200,000 liters of water drinkable, which will allow 24,000 people to be assisted for 90 days, and 220 hygiene kits for the 1,100 people who are in the emergency zones.
To start the activities, the delegation met with the Permanent Contingency Committee of Honduras (Copeco) and with the Municipal Emergency Committee (Codem), which is in charge of coordinating the response in Tegucigalpa.
In this framework, the White Helmets will begin the visit to the areas most affected by the storms that continue to hit the Central American country and will visit different shelters for the victims.
The president of the Aciah, Sabina Frederic, agreed with the Honduran authorities that the civil volunteers will collaborate in two stages, through 11 specialists in planning, logistics, warehouse management for the reception and classification of donations, urban rescue, water purification, attention and psychological support in emergency situations, assistance in shelters and assembly of “Acnur houses”.
In the first stage of the delegation’s work, Galvani will be accompanied by the Director of Operations and Logistics, Mauro Vivas; the health logistician, Verónica Ayala, and the logistician, specialist in comprehensive management of emergency supplies, water and sanitation, Diego Larrere.
In the coming days, the White Helmets and Copeco authorities will define the areas where the collaborative work will continue, as well as the region where the second stage of the mission will be deployed.
