Brazilians have experienced a growing polarization and although almost nine out of ten chose their candidate months ago, according to polls, the election is often based on the rejection of the opponent.
Elections in Brazil: what is chosen this Sunday
Some 500,000 agents will ensure security on election day, while the carrying of weapons by citizens, which Bolsonaro actively promoted during his term, was suspended for three days until Monday.
Voters will also elect a third of the Senate, deputies, governors and legislative assemblies of Brazil’s 27 states on Sunday. If the winner does not exceed 50% of the votes, there will be a second round on October 30.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in principle, would have the necessary votes to prevail in the first round, while President Jair Bolsonaro insists that the polls lie and has assured that he will only recognize the results if the elections are “clean”.
It is expected that today some 156 million, enabled in the register, will approach the voting points throughout the country. The authorized places are schools, educational centers, community centers, among others.
If the former trade unionist wins in the first round, “Bolsonaro will question” the results, since for months, the current president has lashed out without any evidence against the reliability of the electronic vote in force in Brazil since 1996, a system with which he was elected seven times as a deputy and one as president.
Jair Bolsonaro seeks re-election
Bolsonaro, a 67-year-old former army captain, has governed the largest country in Latin America for four years through a crisis, especially with a whipped management of the pandemic that left 686,000 dead and a constant challenge to democratic institutions.
It maintains solid support among the evangelical electorate, agribusiness and the most conservative sectors that defend a society based on God and the family or no abortion.
Lula Da Silva and the long-awaited return
Lula returns to the political arena after having left power with an enviable popularity rating, but without having been able to shake the stain of corruption in the eyes of society. He was convicted and later acquitted on procedural grounds for the “Lava Jato” scandal involving a bribery ring at state oil company Petrobras.
This self-styled “76-year-old young man”, released in November 2019 after spending 19 months in prison, has the support of the popular classes, women and young people, but has also tried to seduce the market and moderate sectors, signing up as vice to the technocrat Geraldo Alckmin.
If he wins, he promises to fight hunger in Brazil, remove the country from its diplomatic isolation and put an end to its image as an environmental “pariah” due to the massive deforestation of the Amazon recorded under Bolsonaro.
His attitude has led many observers not to rule out an attempt at violence by his followers, as occurred with the seizure of the US Capitol in January 2021, two months after the defeat of Donald Trump.
