They began their relationship at the end of 2017, during an event that brought together left-wing activists and artists, including Chico Buarque. But the romance between the two was kept secret until May 2019, when Lula had already been in prison for more than a year after being convicted of corruption in the Lava Jato case, according to the biographer of former president Fernando Morais.

“Lula is in love and his first project when he gets out of prison is to get married,” revealed one of his relatives after visiting him in prison. Lula was released in November 2019, after a change in jurisprudence on serving sentences.

Along with relatives and leaders of the PT, Rosangela waited for him at the exit of the prison in Curitiba (south) and they kissed in front of the crowd that surrounded them.

The wedding took place two and a half years later, on May 18 in Sao Paulo. Closed to the press, the event brought together nearly 200 guests, including family members, politicians and artists.

“I want to give a new meaning to the concept of first lady or ‘first companion’, focusing on priority issues for women, such as food insecurity or domestic violence,” she said during an event in Rio de Janeiro in late August.

Who is Michelle Bolsonaro

With a much more important profile, Michelle Bolsonaro played a leading role not only in the government of Jair Bolsonaro but also during the campaign.

Born and raised in Ceilândia, an administrative region of the Federal District, Michelle de Paula is the daughter of Maria das Graças Firmo Ferreira and Vicente de Paulo Reinaldo, a member of the Adventist Church.

Michelle, who prefers to be called by her compound name, Michelle de Paula, has two daughters: Leticia Aguiar, from a previous relationship, and Laura, from her marriage to Jair Bolsonaro. She is part of the Ministry for the Deaf of Iglesia Bautista Actitud, in Barra da Tijuca, where she acts as a sign language interpreter in services. Before that, she attended the Assembly of God Victory in Christ, led by Pastor Silas Malafaia, the same one who celebrated her marriage (this time religious) with Jair, in 2013.

Defined by the president as a “woman of God” and of the family, Michelle Bolsonaro is used to leading massive events with evangelicals, one of the main support bases of the president and to whom she has promised “Jesus Christ in Government.”

The 40-year-old first lady focused her efforts on attracting the female vote, despite her husband’s sexist and misogynistic statements.

The president’s wife has addressed women both in electoral propaganda broadcast on television and at rallies, where she even stated that “the woman is the husband’s assistant.”

Michelle Bolsonaro sends the message that the president is “a conservative family man” and a “reliable” candidate, says Carolina Botelho, a researcher in political communication and public opinion at the Rio Janeiro State University.
