The shot triggered an unusual alert from the Japanese government, which urged residents of two northern regions of the country to take refuge “inside buildings or underground,” according to Japanese television NHK.
The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, Fumio Kishida, reported on Twitter that “a projectile that appears to be a North Korean ballistic missile probably flew over Japan.”
The launch came amid joint military exercises by South Korea and the United States, and added to an unprecedented series of weapons tests carried out this year by North Korea.
Days ago, Seoul and Washington deployed large-scale naval exercises off the peninsula and for this Friday they are planning submarine maneuvers with Japan, the first in five years.
Visiting Seoul last week, US Vice President Kamala Harris went to the demilitarized zone that divides the peninsula to demonstrate the White House’s commitment to South Korea.
North Korea has deployed a record number of weapons tests this year and last week fired four short-range ballistic missiles.
Washington and Seoul have been warning for months that Pyongyang prepares a new test of a nuclear weapon.
