López Obrador denies allegations of espionage to journalists and activists, after complaints from NGOs

AMLO, as the Mexican president is known in his country, assured that he made a commitment that no one would be spied on, “no opponent,” and asked that if there is evidence they be presented to the corresponding authorities, the Sputnik news agency reported.

Yesterday, NGOs and the media denounced that the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) continues to carry out irregular espionage tasks in the country, and the phones of journalists and activists were tapped with the Pegasus spy program.

“There is conclusive evidence that at least the two journalists and one human rights defender, whose work and investigations have been related to human rights violations committed by the Armed Forces, were spied on with the Pegasus malware from the NSO Group company between 2019 and 2021, that is, during the current government”, started in December 2018, says a statement.

AMLO assured that he was learning about these complaints and assured that this practice, in addition to being improper, is “contrary to our principles, our convictions.”

“We, who have been spied on, persecuted for years, could not do the same,” he said.

“Spy Army”, as the aforementioned report is called, includes the cases of Raymundo Ramos, human rights defender in the state of Tamaulipas; journalist Ricardo Raphael and a journalist from the Animal Político media outlet, whose mobile phones were seized during the current Mexican administration.

AMLO justified the Army’s intelligence work, “not espionage, which is different,” he said.

An extensive report reveals that the Mexican Army “continues to illegally intercept private communications” against civilians.

The researchers point out that their findings contradict the president’s promises, and that this contradiction offers two possible scenarios: the first is that “the president lied” and the second, “that the Armed Forces spy behind the president’s back and disobey the direct order of his Supreme Commander”.

Last Friday, another scandal hit the government after López Obrador confirmed that millions of emails from the Armed Forces were hacked by the group called “Guacamaya”, which also violated military archives in Chile, Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador.

One of those emails published in the massive leak indicates that on August 8 of this year, Military Zone 1, based in the country’s capital, sent an x-ray of social groups in the capital to the Military Intelligence Fusion Coordination Center. accused of committing acts of vandalism.

Among them are 15 feminist groups known in the capital as Black Block, 8M Coordinator, Las Brujas del Mar, Marea Negra, 8M Coordinator and Feminist Coven Collective.
