Gomes, Lula da Silva’s former minister, became a critic of the ex-president during the campaign and had said that he preferred to declare himself neutral, although he later chose to follow the discipline supporter.
The PDT is a historical partner of the Workers’ Party (PT) and in 1989 the Labor candidate, Leonel Brizoladecided to support Lula da Silva in the run-off defeated by Fernando Collor de Mello.
Brazilian Labor had moved away from the PT in 2018 after Gomes traveled to Paris in the second round of that year to avoid campaigning for Ferdinand Haddaddefeated by Jair Bolsonaro in the ballot.
