Corona: Highest number of new infections since April

Corona: Highest number of new infections since April

With much lower test numbers, more than 124,000 people are now actively infected with SARS-CoV-2. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants is just under three digits at 989.2. 122 more infected people have had to be admitted to the hospitals since Tuesday.

Plus 6.5 percent in 25 hours

There was an increase of 6.5 percent within 25 hours. On Wednesday there were 1,985 infected people in local hospitals, 80 of them in intensive care units. There was a decrease of ten patients among the seriously ill. The now almost 2,000 hospitalized are 592 more than a week ago. In this week’s report, the Corona forecast consortium expects a further significant increase in hospitals. In two weeks, hospital patients are expected to increase by 52 percent.

In Upper Austria, 3,760 new infections and a total of 23,586 active cases were reported on Wednesday. 317 patients are currently being treated in connection with Covid-19 in the normal wards and 6 in intensive care wards.

“The hard currency is the intensive care beds”

“The hard currency is the intensive care beds. If you look at the numbers, you can clearly see that in this phase of the pandemic, the number of infected people cannot be translated into hospital stays in the same proportion,” said State Health Minister Christine Haberlander in a broadcast. “Today we have 5.5 times as many infected people as at this time last year, but the admission to the intensive care unit was 20 times higher last year,” Haberlander calculates. She advocates wearing more masks at events and indoors and once again appeals to personal responsibility.

“Due to the now greatly improved immunity in the population, the high number of infections no longer translates into a serious illness to such a large extent. A capacity problem in the area of intensive care units is therefore not expected, but especially in the area of normal wards the numbers are increasing in October going out,” says Bernd Lamprecht, Head of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine with a focus on pneumology.

Numbers a year ago significantly lower

There was also a strong corona wave last autumn, which led to the fourth Austria-wide lockdown on November 22nd. Exactly a year ago, however, the numbers were significantly lower than they are now. On October 5, 2021 there were 2,672 new infections within 24 hours – with more than 500,000 antigen and PCR tests. At the time, 855 infected people were in hospitals, 221 of whom needed intensive care. The number of active cases at the time was 27,137.

Positive rate 13.8 percent

Today’s 17,882 new infections were found in 125,141 tests, the positive rate was 13.8 percent. More new infections within 24 hours were last registered with 20,778 on April 5th – exactly six months ago. There are currently 124,583 laboratory-confirmed active cases in Austria, 10,747 more than the day before. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 5,195,408 confirmed cases in Austria.

Two deaths have been recorded since Tuesday. In the past week alone, 31 Covid deaths were registered. In total, the pandemic has claimed 20,779 lives in Austria since it broke out. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 230.2 people per 100,000 inhabitants have died as a result of an infection.

Current vaccination numbers were not available on Wednesday afternoon. Today’s update has been delayed due to technical difficulties, the Ministry of Health’s vaccination dashboard said.

The current corona autumn wave is reflected more and more clearly in domestic hospitals. There, both infected people and staff shortages lead to bottlenecks:
