It is an important subsidy as far as the expansion of public transport in the east of Linz is concerned. The Ministry of Climate Protection is spending almost nine million euros over a period of three years to support Linz AG Linien with the purchase of 16 fully electric and therefore emission-free trolleybuses. The 24 meter long vehicles are necessary for the future operation of the new trolleybus lines 47/48.
This local transport project is intended to help relieve the load on the country road and the local transport hub Hauptbahnhof and, as is well known, run on parts of the route originally planned for the Stadtbahn between Neue Heimat and Urfahr. The trolleybuses will then also be on their way over the new railway bridge.
Linz AG Director General Erich Haider was delighted with the funding commitment. It is a building block for the planned further development of the transport offer for the people who live and/or work in Linz. For Mayor Klaus Luger (SP), the importance of the planned network expansion in the eastern part of the city extends beyond the borders of Linz. “This is an important north-south connection for those commuting into the city.”
Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP), who is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Linz Linien, sees the “considerable funding” as an opportunity to continue down the path towards emission-free public transport.
