Joe Biden announced a pardon for all those convicted of marijuana possession in the US

In his statement, he said “there are thousands of people who were convicted of marijuana possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result.” Thus, the head of state remarked that his announcement “will take away this burden”.

According to the White House, the pardon would be for some 6,500 people.

Biden: “We classify marijuana at the same level as heroin, it makes no sense”

“Today, I am taking action to end our failed approach,” Biden added on social media.

“I ask governors to pardon simple state marijuana possession offenses. Just as no one should be in federal prison solely for possessing marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason either,” he said.

“We classify marijuana at the same level as heroin, and more serious than fentanyl. It doesn’t make sense,” he added. So, he asked the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General “that they begin the review process of how marijuana is classified in federal law”.

As for the legislation, the head of state said that “as federal and state regulations change, we still need significant limitations on the trafficking, marketing and sales of marijuana to minors.”

In that tone, the Democrat concluded: “Sending people to jail for marijuana possession has changed too many lives, for conduct that is legal in many states. That is before addressing the clear racial disparities around prosecution and sentencing.” Today, we begin to correct these errors.”
