The Mühlviertler Hof of the Geirhofer family belongs to a species that is apparently dying out: the country inn. Even if the chefs Anita and Christian, like many other restaurateurs, are struggling with a lack of staff, they serve home-style cooking in a cultivated, rustic ambience, with the ingredients mostly coming from the region.
The menu, which changes every two months, is manageable with currently ten main dishes and tends to be meat-heavy, but each dish is well thought out and spiced up with a dash of sophistication. The guests are entertained in the parlor, in the vault or in summer in the guest garden, which can seat up to 100 people. The ballroom with up to 250 seats is available for celebrations.
When we visited, we had the appetizers Mushroom cream soup with camelina oil (5.20 euros), which was fine and creamy and contained many crunchy porcini mushrooms, and the autumnal tapas (10.50 euros), which could almost be considered a main course: the goat’s milk pralines were deliciously fried, the beets almost melted in your mouth, the sheep’s cheese with salad, apples and nuts was well seasoned.
We chose the main courses from the regional range marked by name: Das Brook trout fillet (Schöffl family fish farm, 19.20 euros) was tender and excellently seasoned, the pumpkin gnocchi with cinnamon tasted great. That too Loin of wandering pig from the Kirnbauernhof (14.80 euros) left nothing to be desired, only the risotto was a bit soggy.
When it came to desserts, the soft, fluffy ones scored highly nougat pocket (7.20 euros) with a portion of cereal ice cream, the two pancakes (4.40 euros) were fluffy, but tasted a bit too sweet.
