The previous balance released yesterday had reported 10 dead people, to which were added the nine bodies rescued in the last hours.
On Tuesday, a massive avalanche trapped a group of about 30 mountaineering instructors and apprentices near the summit of Draupadi ka Danda II mountain in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
The police, the Indian air force and the emergency teams were mobilized for the rescue work, which was complicated by snow and rain in the area. “Rescue operations resumed during the day but are subject to weather conditions, and the weather is bad,” spokeswoman Ridhim Aggarwal said.
Sunil Lalwani, one of the rescued trainees, credited the instructors with saving many lives.
Climbing incidents are common in the Himalayas, the range where Everest is located, and several of the highest mountains in the world. In August, the body of a mountain climber was recovered two months after falling through a crevasse while crossing a glacier in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
Last week, an avalanche killed Nepalese mountaineer Anup Rai and well-known American mountaineer Hilaree Nelson on Nepal’s 8,163-meter Manaslu peak.
