US kills two top Islamic State commanders in northern Syria

“On Wednesday night, US forces conducted a helicopter operation near Qamishli against Rakan Wahid al-Shamri, a perpetrator known for facilitating arms smuggling and the clandestine transport of fighters,” Centcom wrote.

“The target individual was killed and one of his companions was injured. Two other companions were detained,” the command said. He also added that no US military or civilians were injured in the operation.

In another statement, Centcom reported a second attack, this time by air, which killed two senior IS officials, including a leader it identifies as Abu-Hashum al-Umawi.

Leader of the international anti-jihadist coalition in the area, the United States had never carried out a helicopter operation in the area controlled by the Syrian government since the start of the war in 2011.

In Syria, state television reported that “US occupation forces carried out a landing operation with several helicopters” in Hassake province (northeast) “and killed one person.”

The village of Muluk Saray, the target of the operation, is located 17 kilometers south of the city of Qamishli and is under the control of Syrian forces, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH).

It is the first such operation in an area controlled by the Syrian government, the observatory said. A villager said that three US helicopters with soldiers on board landed overnight.

US forces raided a house where they killed one person and took others into custody, the resident told the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. “They used loudspeakers to call the residents to stay indoors” during the action, the witness added.
