The Petro Government agreed to purchase three million hectares for rural reform in Colombia

“A historic agreement” were the only three words that Petro wrote on his Twitter account, along with a photo of all the participants in the meeting. The agreement for the 3 million fertile hectares will be formalized tomorrow with the signing of the so-called “Great National Agreement for the Agrarian Pact.”

“This is a historic act. The third component of the agrarian reform begins. We already had the first, which is the titling, with more than 600,000 hectares. Second, we know that the Special Assets Company is in process, which will lease 125,000 hectares for peasant organizations; and today the purchase of land begins with the offer of Fedegan”, highlighted the Minister of Agriculture, Cecilia López.

The head of the livestock organization, José Félix Lafaurie, stressed, meanwhile, that Petro’s is a “dialogue” government and highlighted that an agreement was reached that will bring “a lot of peace of mind to the rural sector and open up the possibility of the countryside consolidates a class and a half”.

The land issue constitutes point 1 of the 2016 peace agreement signed with the FARC, and the Government made it clear that it intends a comprehensive rural reform. That is why it seeks to title 7 million hectares and buy these other 3 million to award them to peasants and small producers.

The agreement with the ranchers was the other outstanding news for the Petro Executive, which also celebrated the approval today, in the first instance, in commissions, of the official tax reform project.

After nine hours of discussion, the text that aims to increase State collection had the approval of the 3rd committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The mining-energy sector, the financial system and the hydroelectric plants will make significant contributions to the new scheme.

“Advancing towards a sustainable development model and creating a fair taxation system, where those who have the most are the ones who pay the most, are the objectives of the reform that we present. I thank the Economic Commissions for their approval in the first debate,” he pondered Petro on his Twitter account.

The opposition groups of the Democratic Center and Radical Change protested for what they considered to be a lack of debate time for the project.
