UN appointed a special rapporteur to monitor the repression in Russia

Before the vote, the Russian ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Gennady Gatilovand former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, criticized the text and accused “Western countries of use the Council for political purposes“.

The Argentine delegation, led by Minister Sebastian Rosalesvoted in favor of the resolution “with the understanding that the role of the universal system for the promotion and protection of human rights is fundamentaland in particular of this Council, for the strengthening of human rights in the Russian Federation,” reported the Foreign Ministry.

“Notwithstanding the support we offer to this proposal, Argentina hopes that this decision will be implemented with the greater objectivity and without promoting Polarization of this Council, urging all countries to reaffirm the commitment assumed in resolution 60/251 in which we recognized that the ‘promotion and protection of human rights must be based on the principles of cooperation and genuine dialogue and aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Member States in the fulfillment of their international human rights obligations’”, added Rosales when substantiating the affirmative vote.

Russia – which a few months ago abandonment the Council, when the General Assembly of the United Nations voted its expulsion because of the invasion of Ukraine – has, however, the status of observer and, as such, can be expressed in the Council.

The resolution, adopted on the 70th birthday of the Russian president Vladimir Putindecided to appoint a special rapporteur in charge of monitoring “the human rights situation” for a period of one year.
