The US announces new aid to reduce the migratory flow from Latin America to its borders

The Secretary of State gave as an example the cases of Colombia and Peru, which received 2.4 million and 1.3 million Venezuelan refugees, respectively.

“The United States will provide an additional $240 million in bilateral humanitarian aid to help receive and address the needs of immigrants and refugees in the region,” Blinken said.

“We have more displaced people around the world than ever before in our history, more than 100 million,” the official stressed. “And our own hemisphere is experiencing that in profound and new ways,” he added in remarks reproduced by the AFP news agency.

The ministerial meeting took place as a result of the “Los Angeles Declaration” on immigration adopted at the IX Summit of the Americas last June in that city in the state of California.

The humanitarian aid is intended to finance the reception of migrants and refugees in various sectors, such as health and education, and adds to the millions of dollars already contributed by the United States to accommodate the migratory flow of Venezuelans, the State Department spokeswoman said. Kristina Rosales.

According to a statement from that portfolio, US$39.8 million will be for internally displaced persons in Colombia; $26.8 million for regional funding for “vulnerable refugees and migrants” in the Americas; and $15 million to strengthen the capacities of governments to manage migration.

The State Department said the initiative aims to promote “humane, orderly, safe and well-managed migration,” combat human trafficking and reduce irregular migration, as well as favor subregional labor migration programs.

On the other hand, more than US$160 million will be allocated to bilateral and regional security. Of these, US$12.9 million will be for border security initiatives for Colombia, Mexico and Peru. Another $147.4 million will go “to improve the underlying security factors that push Central Americans to migrate.”
