Putin allies greet him for his 70th birthday and Germany asks him to reconsider

“The president of Russia was congratulated by telephone by the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultán Nazarbaev, the president of Kyrgyzstan, Sadir Zhaparov, the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa,” reported the statement quoted by the Sputnik news agency.

According to the note, the telephone conversations focused on issues of the development of bilateral relations, as well as current international problems, without specifying whether the war in Ukraine was among the topics discussed.

In his greeting, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said that Putin is building a “powerful” Russia through his “vigorous activities,” and expressed his desire to develop bilateral relations.

“Russia reliably defends the dignity of the state and its fundamental interests from the challenges and threats of the United States and its vassal forces. Such a reality is unthinkable without its distinguished leadership and strong will,” said the leader, according to the news agency. KCNA

Another ally, Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, praised Putin for “transforming Russia’s image, strengthening its sovereignty and defensive capabilities, and defending national interests.”

He also wishes him “physical and moral strength for many years,” and urged him to pray for the health of the Russian president, in power for more than twenty years, the AFP news agency reported.

“God put you in power to carry out a mission of special importance and great responsibility to the country and its people,” said the 75-year-old patriarch.

The leader of the Russian Orthodox since 2009 put his Church at the service of the Kremlin and also supports the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

On the contrary, the German government indicated today that it hopes that Putin will take advantage of his birthday to “reconsider” the invasion of Ukraine.

“It would be desirable that the Russian president reconsider and end this violation of international law,” said one of the spokesmen for the German Executive, Wolfgang Büchner, asked about the issue at a press conference.

Putin’s birthday also coincided with the delivery of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Russian organization Memorial, an organization that denounces the existence of political prisoners and the violation of human rights in the country and which was dissolved by order of the Supreme Court after being listed as a foreign agent in Russia.

Also recognized today was the Center for Civil Liberties, a Ukrainian organization that in the midst of the invasion seeks to identify and document war crimes and, in collaboration with its international partners, hold the guilty to account.

Another setback for Putin on his birthday was given by the UN Human Rights Council, which today for the first time appointed a Special Rapporteur in charge of monitoring the repression of opponents in Russia, after a vote in which 17 countries -Argentina among them- supported this initiative.
