The government is once again expanding the subsidy for heating exchanges

The funding campaign “Get out of oil and gas” is being expanded. In multi-storey residential buildings with decentralized boilers, building owners as well as owners and tenants of individual apartments can apply for funding. But you also have to bear the costs of changing the heating system.

In order to make the conversion from decentralized gas boilers to central heating systems in multi-storey residential buildings more attractive, the support fee will be increased from 2,300 to 3,000 euros per connected apartment. As a surcharge, an additional 600 euros per residential unit can be awarded here, as the Ministry of Climate announced.

A new supplement will also be awarded to promote the switch from gas-powered central heating systems to district heating, heat pumps or wood heating. This amounts to at least 2000 euros, depending on the size of the facility.

“The switch to a clean heating system is easier and more attractive than ever before,” said Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). So far, more than 80,000 registrations and applications have been made as part of the restructuring offensive (2021/2022). A total of 565 million euros have been reserved for this. More than 3000 registrations and applications were submitted for the additional funding “Clean heating for everyone”.

According to Gewessler, with the now expanded “Get out of oil and gas” funding, an overall increase in gas savings of around ten percent is expected – compared to the applications for the funding campaign that have been received so far.

For Manfred Denk, head of the federal guild for sanitary, heating and ventilation technicians, however, the decentralized heat supply has its justification.

District heating: 65 percent gas

“With district heating, it has been proven that there are around 30 percent higher losses through energy conversion and transport than with decentralized heating systems. District heating is only available in urban areas, and up to 65 percent of it is currently generated from fossil gas.”

ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian called for a “warmth package” from the government. An electricity price brake alone is not enough: “The Austrian gas price index is a whopping 340 percent higher than in October last year.”
