appoints new economy minister

Buenrostro graduated with honors in mathematics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and winner of the coveted “Gabino Barreda” medal for the most outstanding students, with a master’s degree from the prestigious Colegio de México, has a long history of 20 years in public administration.

Although the opposition has earned her the reputation of being “tough” and responsible for the shortage of medicines and the extreme austerity that left thousands of bureaucrats on the street, some experts also consider her a “scrupulous” woman in public spending. , honest and a key player in the president’s fight against corruption.

The appointment confirmed the fears of some analysts that a person less close to the businessmen and more to the monopoly and statist wing, which some consider to dominate the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, would be appointed.

However, businessmen close to the government such as the Business Coordinating Council welcomed the appointment and trusted “his ability to pay for the economic development of citizens and companies and work for the economic reactivation of Mexico.”

Since yesterday, some experts had expressed their concern about a possible shift in policy in the sector, given the “failure” that the government has had on issues such as low growth and high inflation.

Clouthier read his resignation letter full of words of affectionate gratitude and with a broken voice in front of López Obrador himself, he curbed some speculation about disagreements with the head of state.

This did not prevent, however, the press today from formulating hypotheses about possible disagreements between the outgoing minister, a former fighting partner of López Obrador despite her ties to businessmen, and being the daughter of an opposition leader and former right-wing presidential candidate, Manuel Clouthier, who died in a suspicious accident in 1989.

For example, they estimated, among other things, that the former minister believed that the government’s energy policy does violate the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada (T-MEC), in force since 1994, as Washington considers it, and that in a panel of controversy Mexico would lose.

Clouthier was precisely the head of the negotiations with the neighboring country, which called a few months ago for consultations within the framework of the arbitration mechanisms of the T-MEC, considering that the Mexican energy policy affects the investments of its companies and the environment. .

The resignation occurs precisely when the 75-day limit is met for the consultations to conclude and a dispute panel is called, in the event that a settlement of the dispute is not reached, although it is not a “fatal date”, but a minimum term.

The opposition in Congress reacted to Clouthier’s resignation with strong criticism for the negative management of the government that has prevented attracting investment and the lack of support for small and medium-sized industries.

“The economy is a disaster. Inflationary problems, low investment, capital outflows, works at double the cost that was said, decrease in real wages, increase in violence, among other things, have us in ruins,” said Alberto Acosta, deputy of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, center).

In any case, the leading organizations of the private sector advocated that, regardless of who holds the position in the ministry, maintain close ties with businessmen and know how to listen to their proposals.
