The railway companies asked passengers not to take the train unless “absolutely necessary”.
A week ago, on October 1, services were also practically paralyzed, as four transport unions (RMT, Unite, Aslef and TSSA) held a common day of action.
Today, nearly 40,000 members of the RMT union of the Network Rail network and of fifteen railway operating companies mobilized to demand an increase in wages and better working conditions.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch has urged the British government to allow rail companies to negotiate a deal with the unions, the AFP news agency reported.
The government “must release the rail operators who currently receive their mandate directly from you,” the unionist wrote in a letter to Transport Minister Anne Marie Trevelyan.
The UK is in the throes of a severe cost of living crisis, with inflation close to 10%, highest in 40 yearsmainly due to rising energy and food prices caused, in part, by the war in Ukraine.
