“At least 185 people have been killed, including at least 19 children, in protests across Iran. The highest number of killings occurred in Sistan and Baluchistan province, half the number recorded,” the organization said on Saturday. Iran Human Rights, which is based in Norway, in a statement.
Authorities, who deny using lethal ammunition, have described the protests as a plot by Iran’s enemies, including the United States, and blame armed dissidents – among others – for the violence, which they say has killed at least 20 members of the security forces.
Videos shared on social media showed protests continuing in dozens of cities across Iran early on Sunday, with hundreds of high school and college students joining them despite the use of tear gas, batons and, in many cases, live ammunition by security forces, according to rights groups.
A widely followed video posted on Twitter by activist 1500tasvir showed a man yelling “don’t hit my wife, she’s pregnant” as he tried to protect her from a dozen riot police beating the couple in the city of Rafsanjan. Other videos showed protesters blocking some streets in southern Tehran.
Some posts on social media said stores were closed in several cities following activists’ call for a strike.
Reuters was unable to verify the videos and messages. Details about the victims have emerged slowly, in part due to restrictions imposed by authorities on the Internet.
Amini, who was arrested in Tehran on September 13 for wearing “inappropriate attire”, died three days later in a Tehran hospital.
A state coroner’s report on Saturday said Amini had died due to underlying medical conditions. Her father has held the police responsible for her death, and the family’s lawyer has said “respectable doctors” believe she was beaten while she was in detention.
