Golden autumn with interruptions

The leaves are changing color, the forests are becoming more and more colorful and instead of raindrops, colorful leaves will probably fall towards the ground this week and next. Sunny weather and little wind bring warm afternoons again.

For Josef Haslhofer from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), this is a typical golden autumn: “Although there is no precise definition for it, for me the golden autumn is when the leaves are slowly changing color and the weather is still sunny and is warm.”

Next Thursday and next week will be the perfect weather again to stay outside, he says. When the clock is changed in the night to October 30, “it gets dark an hour earlier, so you don’t have much time in the light after work.” That’s why it’s important to spend the next few days and weeks in the fresh air when the weather is nice and enjoy the sun. Hiking is a good option for outdoor exercise, especially from next week when temperatures rise above 20 degrees.

This weekend isn’t the right time for that, though: rain is gathering on Saturday night. High fog and fog can limit visibility at the weekend, especially in the morning. Saturday will also be windy with peaks of up to 30 km/h. This can be fun, especially for children and the young at heart: they can fly their kites.

“Otherwise you have to have a bit of patience,” says the meteorologist. He doesn’t expect strong winds in the next ten days. A cold snap is also not in sight for the next two weeks.
