The British actress died “peacefully in her sleep at her home in Los Angeles” at the age of 96, her family said on Tuesday, according to US media reports. The award-winning actress, who received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2014, would have turned 97 on Sunday.
Born in London in 1925, Lansbury has starred in numerous films and television films over the course of her long career, including “The House of Lady Alquist”, “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, “The Ambassador of Fear” and “Death on the Nile”. She also had great success on Broadway. She is perhaps best known for her role as detective Jessica Fletcher on the TV series Murder, which ran between 1984 and 1996.
Lansbury has won six Golden Globes and five Tony Theater and Musical Awards. She was nominated for an Oscar three times.
