students occupied the Ministry of Education and were evicted by the Police

The students, who took over the building demanding “more budget, against the educational reform and for more real participation”, entered at 7:30, and two hours later they agreed to be evicted peacefully on the condition that they celebrate a meeting with the authorities in the next 24 hours, reported the newspaper El Observador.

“It was a very peaceful vacancy, based on dialogue,” said the director of Coexistence and Citizen Security, Santiago González, in charge of mediating with the protesters. “They were talking with the data to generate an instance of dialogue when the ministry understands it,” he added.

The union spokeswoman, Jazmín Gallardo, explained that the students demand a “negotiation table” with the educational authorities and MEC representatives to discuss the terms of the educational reform, as well as other matters related to the budget, the building conditions of the centers , the choice of teaching hours and vacancies. The day before, the students had occupied the headquarters of the Teachers’ Institute for the same reasons.

These measures take place within the framework of a struggle of various education unions against the Government, when the General Assembly, the country’s Parliament, is in the final stretch to vote on the Accountability and Budget Execution Balance bill. .

In fact, on October 4, students, teachers and officials from the University of the Republic, the main tertiary education center in Uruguay, began the first general strike since 2002.

This ended four days later, although, according to a statement issued on October 8, now it will advance to “a new stage of the conflict” in which there will be mobilizations, concentrations and different strikes.
