Satellite prototypes will be the first to be launched as part of the network Kuiper of Amazon, a planned constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit designed to transmit Bandwidth Internet to remote parts of the world.

The company promised to invest $10 billion in the project, with the goal of catching up with SpaceX’s Starlink network, which is growing rapidly and already offers Internet service to thousands of customers in dozens of countries.

Amazon’s last-minute switch to ULA’s Vulcan rocket will be a convenient test run with its partner, before the 38 future releases Vulcan which it bought from the launch company in 2021 to help deploy the bulk of its operational satellites.

Amazon did not say when it plans to launch those first operational satellites. Communications regulators USA require the company to deploy half of its constellation before 2026. The company’s other contract for at least two ABL releases follows validthough Amazon isn’t sure which satellites it will use those rockets for, a spokesman said.
