As the OÖ Nachrichten reported, around 400 drugs are only available to a limited extent or not at all. Antibiotics are also in short supply. There are always delivery problems here, reported the Ö1 morning journal. The drug azithromycin – this antibiotic is one of the most important agents for bacterial respiratory and skin diseases – is currently not available at all. Many other antibiotics are currently only available to a very limited extent, says the Vice President of the Chamber of Pharmacists, Jürgen Rehak, who runs a pharmacy in Höchst in Vorarlberg.
Mask protection against illness
More contacts and fewer protective measures are causing the number of infections, including bacterial ones, to rise again apart from Covid-19. Diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics, if this is medically necessary. Until September this year, twice as many antibiotics were used as in the previous year. The reason: Since the end of the mask requirement, bacterial infections have increased again. A connection with the omission of the corona protection measures is obvious.
According to figures from the Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry, the consumption of antibiotics fell significantly in the pandemic years 2020 and 2021 and is now rising again. According to the Morgenjournal, the current demand is still below the pre-corona level.
