Mask requirement according to the Viennese model is not an issue for the time being

The corona autumn wave still has Austria firmly under control: around 13,600 people are infected with the virus nationwide (as of Wednesday), the seven-day incidence is 1056. Upper Austria took the inglorious first place yesterday with 1210 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants State comparison.

In view of these developments, the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) sees a need for Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens): The measures to protect against the corona virus should be raised to the Viennese level throughout Austria from Monday the week after next, after the current regulation has expired, he said know yesterday via mailing. The federal capital has always followed its own, much more restrictive path when it comes to pension management.

This would mean the reintroduction of mask requirements on public transport and in pharmacies. Masks would then have to be worn again in hospitals and in old people’s and nursing homes and a valid test would have to be presented before entering. In any case, Vienna will retain these measures for the time being, announced Ludwig.

Upper Austria’s LH deputy and State Councilor for Health Christine Haberlander (VP) basically supports a joint approach by the federal government, as she confirmed yesterday to the OÖ Nachrichten. However, it is important “that we don’t just look at the incidences alone, but maintain an overall view, especially with regard to the occupancy of the hospitals”.

The indicators for this are the intensive care units. The situation there is “still stable” for the time being, said Haberlander. However, if mandatory and tightening measures become necessary again, a uniform approach is needed here.

Until then, the state health councilor appealed to the population’s personal responsibility: “Now it makes sense to wear the mask, especially if you have the feeling that you cannot or do not want to avoid large crowds and want to protect yourself in particular”, said Haberlander.
