Ground-breaking ceremony for a new self-help workshop

A new building will replace the old Lebenshilfe workshop on Friedhofstraße from 2023. After closing four years ago, the facility moved to the old Raiffeisenbank in Thalheim for four years. Not far from the original location, a new property is now being built at the back of Wels main station. On Wednesday, Lebenshilfe celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony with guests of honor. In 2009 there were the first conversion plans for the smaller of the two workshops in Wels. Thirteen years later the time had finally come. “The long wait and the many inquiries were rewarded,” said regional spokeswoman Denise Fuchsberger, pleased about the starting shot. The new facility will open next fall. In addition to a workshop, a café and a shop are to be built in the new building, where four to six disabled people will find meaningful employment.

According to Lebenshilfe managing director Gerhard Scheinast, the café is intended to be a meeting place where people with disabilities can meet people who are not. The plans for the new workshop envisage the extensive elimination of barriers. There, a team of eight employees will take up to 38 employees between the ages of 18 and 59 under their wing. What the Lebenshilfe employees and their protégés are particularly pleased about are the plans for a new garden that was missing in the alternative quarters.
