Repeal a law that prevented the marriage of pregnant women

The norm had already gone through a review instance in 2016: until then the marriage ban ruled for six months.

Critics of the rule who campaigned for its repeal argued that with that law “they judge outdated and discriminatorily” to women in Japan.

The government will deliver the revised civil code to the current parliamentary session that ends on December 10 and, if approved, expected to come into force in 2024according to local media.

The gender gap in Japan

Japan consistently ranks low in the World Economic Forum’s annual report on the global gender gap, which takes into account women’s political and economic participation, as well as health and education.

In 2022 the country ranks 116 out of 146 and, two years ago, the government postponed the goal that at least 30% of management positions in business and politics be held by women.

Although Japan’s position improved from 121st place in 2021, the World Economic Forum analyzed in this edition 10 countries less. In this way, the results do not translate into a reduction in the gender gap.

The study specifically analyzes statistics related to women in four areas: politics, economy, education and health. To represent the gender gap numerically, a score of 1 is assigned if there is total equality and zero if it is totally non-existent.
