“We believe that arming each party to the crisis will prolong the war,” the Iranian official said in a telephone conversation with his Portuguese counterpart, Joao Gomes Cravinho.
“We do not believe that war is the right way, not in Ukraine, not in Afghanistan, not in Syria, not in Yemen,” he added, according to statements reproduced by the AFP news agency.
In another phone call on Friday with the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, Amir-Abdollahian reiterated the official position of neutrality adopted by his country in the face of the conflict that began in February.
“We cooperate with Russia on defense matters, but our policy regarding the war in Ukraine is not to send weapons to the parties to the conflict, to stop the war and put an end to the displacement of people,” the Iranian foreign minister argued.
Last Monday, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said that Russia used Iranian drones to attack energy infrastructure in several cities in Ukraine.
Last month, Ukraine decided to significantly reduce its diplomatic relations with Tehran over the alleged delivery of weapons to Russia.
