The Economy Minister and leader of the Greens, Robert Habecksucceeded like this curb a motion presented by the bases of the formation parto veto the extension of the deadline for the closure of the Neckarwestheim 2 and Isar 2 plantsin southern Germany.
“What if we are going to support nuclear energy? Of course not. No way is that going to happen. Not being in the federal government. Not with the Greens in the federal government and not with (the Minister of the Environment) Steffi Lemke and not with me,” Habeck said.
The official acknowledged that the Approved measures could be painful for the Greens“but we will never be wrong about what is the problem and what is the solution: fossil fuels and nuclear energy are the problem”.
The third German nuclear power plant still in operation, that of Emslandsnear Netherlands, twill have to close at the end of this yearas initially planned, as approved by The Greens.
The Free Democratic Party, Scholz’s third coalition partner, defends instead hold the working Emslands even beyond the spring of 2023.
Germany, the main economy within the European Union, is one of the countries most affected within the bloc by the brake on the supply of Russian gas and oil adopted as a sanction for the war in Ukraine. The country had agreed to go towards the closure of its last three nuclear power plants in December 2021, after having closed three others earlier. The measure was promoted by the Green Party, the Government’s main partner in the coalition.
The lack of Russian gas also forced the government to relax its bilateral relations, which were slowed down, as in the case of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The link with that country had been suspended since the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Kashoggi in the consulate of that country in Istanbul. At the end of September, Scholtz visited Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, main targeted by the crime, to open negotiations for the supply of gas.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, the former head of governmentAngela Merkelwas accused of having increased dependence on Russian energy, especially by promoting the construction of the gas pipeline North Stream 2. The former chancellor came out to clarify this week that she did not regret having made those decisions that, in her opinion, were the most sensible at the time.
The lack of energy increased the projections of recession for the countryas reported this week by IMF.
