NA BAND DEBATE: PRESIDENTIAL 2022 – SECOND ROUND

It is a key instance to win over undecided votersaccording to analysts, in the midst of a campaign of strong attacks among the candidates and from their entourage, including accusations of cannibalism, pedophilia or links to organized crime.

In the first round of October 2, Lula prevailed with 48.4% of the vote, against 43.2% for Bolsonaro, who had a better result than anticipated by the polls.

Voting trend

Facing the ballot, the leader of the workers party (PT) march as Favourite, with the 49% of voting intentionsfive percentage points from Bolsonaro, who has 44% of support, according to a survey by the Datafolha Institute released last Friday.

93% of those consulted indicated that they had already defined their vote, while 6% said they would vote blank or invalid, and 2% said they were undecided.

In the most polarized electoral process in decades in Brazil, Lula and Bolsonaro are making an effort these days to win support, especially in key regions such as the northeast of the country.

tensions

Both have debated with other candidates on two occasions, in August and September, before the first round. On those occasions, they exchanged insults and accusations in a bellicose tone.

But in recent weeks, the campaign has escalated even more.

Saturday, Bolsonaro was center of opposition criticism for statements in which he indicated that he had entered the home for Venezuelan minors in a vulnerable neighborhood after generating “a climate.”

As he clarified later in an atypical live broadcast early this Sunday to reject criticism, Bolsonaro was referring to a visit during the pandemic to Sao Sebastiao, a poor neighborhood in Brasilia, recorded on television.

“The PT crossed all limits,” he saidoutraged.

The president’s lawyers appealed to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to prevent the “decontextualized” use of the statements by Lula’s party, which broadcast the video on its networks this Sunday.

Days ago, Bolsonaro accused Lula of being “drunk” and circulated false information – even fogueada by one of the president’s sons -, which associated the leftist with organized crime after wearing a cap with the initials of a favela complex in Rio de Janeiro.

In this scenario, where “the proposals lost centrality and the accusations gained ground”, “a heated debate is expected, with very little information on government plans”, analyzes Christopher Mendonca, a doctor in Political Science.

Lula advances towards the ballot with the support of former candidate and senator Simone Tebet and former center-left candidate Ciro Gomes, who garnered 4% and 3% respectively in the first round.

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro has key support from higher-income voters and evangelicals.
