“The end of a toxic relationship”: 31-year-old in court for attempted murder

The prosecutor explained that the killing only failed because the accused narrowly missed the carotid artery with the carving knife. “The act represented the end of a toxic relationship,” the prosecutor said. After a dispute on the evening of October 28, 2021, the 31-year-old went into the 35-year-old’s room with a gun and cut his neck and stabbed him. “I wanted him to be as scared as I have always been,” the defendant said.

“The first six months were normal”

The defense attorney described the 31-year-old’s childhood with an abusive stepfather, then an abusive partner with whom she has two children. In November 2018, she met the 35-year-old, with whom she had a deep love. “The first six months were normal, he just broke things,” said the accused about the relationship. After moving into his house, for which she took over a loan of 450,000 euros, “it really started”.

He attacked her when he drank alcohol. He physically attacked her 20 to 30 times, mostly pushing so that she fell against something. Property damage, “I can’t count”, including a refrigerator, an oven, and two cell phones, he would have demolished. She had moved out for a week a few times, but always returned to him.

On the evening of the crime, “nothing suited him,” according to the accused. Both had consumed alcohol. There was an argument about the food, he knocked over the table and went into the “smoking room”. She got a knife from the kitchen, but she couldn’t remember exactly what she did.

“I want to see you die”

The 35-year-old, who will no longer testify in court, said when he was questioned that the 31-year-old had come into the room with her hand behind her back. “It was quick, I didn’t see the knife, it went over my neck,” read the presiding judge. The defendant said: “I’ll kill you” and “I want to see you die, you pig”. He was able to take the knife away from her and ran out of the house. “I never know that exactly, then it will be true,” said the accused. According to police notes, the accused said several times: “I wanted to stab him, this time he was afraid.” When the public prosecutor reproached her, she said: “If I had wanted to, I could have killed him”.

With their questions, the public prosecutor and the defense attorney portrayed a toxic relationship between the accused and her partner with a lot of alcohol and drugs, from which the children of the accused also suffered. “I wanted to get away from him, but I didn’t know how to do it.” She believed until the end that she could change her partner, the accused said with tears.

Intoxicated but sane

The expert stated that the accused had never suffered from serious mental illness and was sane at the time of the offence. However, she was moderately (1.64 per mille) drunk, but not an alcoholic. In the opinion of the expert, there was also no high or highest degree of affect.

On the second count of false testimony following her arrest, the defendant pleaded guilty. She is accused of using her sister to get her former partner to change his statements while she was in custody, which he initially did. However, he reverted to his original version when letters from the defendants in custody to another man came to light. The 35-year-old and the defendant’s sister have already been convicted of giving false evidence or contributing.
