Young man drowned while swimming in Lake Attersee

Police, Red Cross, fire brigade and water rescue were on Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Attersee (Vöcklabruck district). The emergency services were alerted around 3 p.m. after a young asylum seeker went under in the Attersee. The 26-year-old and two friends – also from Syria – went into the water from a bathing spot near a hotel and never returned to the shore.

While the alarmed divers from the fire brigade and water rescue were preparing for the underwater search, the ÖWR task boats Nußdorf, Unterach and Weyregg searched the area. From a boat, the motionless body could be spotted about ten meters from the shore at a depth of around five meters on the bottom of the lake.

The emergency services brought the 26-year-old to the surface. Despite the speedy recovery, any help came too late for the young man. The emergency doctor could only determine his death, the water rescue announced on Tuesday afternoon.
