Two brothers from the Spittal/Drau district discovered it in a steep gully at 2,540 meters above sea level. The 38-year-old younger of the two abseiled down to the animal, which suddenly ran uphill. The older man tried to grab the sheep and fell to his death, police said.

For unknown reasons, the 43-year-old lost his balance or stumbled and fell over an approximately 45-metre-high, almost vertical rock face. On the ground he fell a further 30 meters down the valley, overturning several times. In order to be able to set the rescue chain in motion, the brother had to climb back up to the belay without a rope and unsecured.

After the arrival of the emergency doctor, only the death of the 43-year-old man could be determined. The casualty was rescued by helicopter and flown into the valley.
