Hospital: 50 percent less gas consumption

The Braunau hospital has been a climate alliance partner since 2012 – and since then the hospital has been able to reduce its natural gas consumption by 50 percent and also uses 40 percent less water.

Many measures have been taken, according to Markus Plunger, the technical manager of the Braunau hospital. A first major step away from gas was taken in 2017 with the installation of our own pellet heating system. The first photovoltaic system was set up in 2013, and this year a new, more efficient chiller was installed. According to the hospital, the new gas boiler, highly efficient circulation pumps, LED lighting and a new steam supply concept also contribute to lower energy consumption. The new component 10, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2024, will be constructed as a “green building” in which 25 percent of the energy will be saved compared to the building regulations for new buildings. The heart of the system is a highly efficient closed loop heat recovery system for the ventilation units: With heat recovery, the heat or coolness of the exhaust air, i.e. the used air, is used to heat the incoming fresh air in winter and cool it in summer.

The system for component 10 will have an efficiency of 75 percent, and the system is particularly efficient at transition temperatures. Only “green electricity” flows in the Braunau hospital: certified green electricity. “We buy with the environmental label 46. The certificates of origin come 100 percent from Austria,” says Plunger.
