Russia’s war against Ukraine and its aftermath have made it all the more urgent to transform the world’s energy system, according to a resolution passed in Strasbourg on Thursday. The EU must show leadership and increase its emissions reduction targets for 2030.
Many of the long-term commitments to climate neutrality are ambiguous and not transparent enough. In addition, the industrialized countries must ensure that the developing countries receive 100 billion US dollars every year for climate protection, as promised, according to the MEPs.
“The climate conference must end the age of fossil fuels. Time is running out to stop the climate catastrophe and limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees,” said Thomas Waitz, co-chair of the European Green Party and Austrian MEP a broadcast. He said new record levels of subsidies for coal, oil and gas would break Glasgow’s promise to move away from fossil fuels. The environmental spokesman for the ÖVP in the European Parliament, Alexander Bernhuber, also called for climate protection to have global priority. “It must therefore be our common concern to make Europe more sustainable and at the same time remain economically successful in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
