Stay cool

The debate about the early start of the ski season in autumn with the start of the World Cup in Sölden has been going on for years. In times of global warming, it becomes increasingly heated. You should stay cool and classify things soberly. The glacier in Sölden doesn’t give a damn if not only normal ski tourists but also World Cup runners slide down its hump in autumn. Organizing ski races in already developed ski areas is not an environmental sin. The early start of the World Cup is a wish from the ski industry, which hopes that the two giant slalom events will stimulate purchases. The tourist advertising effect is not bad either. Let them drive while they still can.

The signs of the times

Water-intensive snowmaking, floodlights and nature pushed back for streams of visitors – much of what is considered standard in the ski circus no longer corresponds to the spirit of the times. The meager bands of snow in the middle of scree slopes or muddy brown mountain flora are on the one hand the harbingers of what is to come in terms of climate, and on the other hand anything but tourism advertising. The much too early start of the season is an expression of the profit hunt of the FIS bosses. They prefer to close their eyes to the signs of the times and dream of winters “like before”. But even that didn’t last that long: Karl Schranz only drove to his first overall World Cup victory from December to March. And back then, according to Grandma, they had a lot more snow.
