Tyrolean bus driver died after a collision with a freight train on Thursday

At around 7 a.m., he was behind the wheel of a school bus at an unrestricted level crossing for reasons that are still unknown. Two children were also injured in the accident. The bus was dragged around 30 meters, touched a catenary mast and then came to a standstill. The local bus driver was thrown out of the bus due to the rotation of the vehicle and landed about 20 meters next to the tracks, according to the executive. He was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck. The two children – a German pair of siblings aged eleven and 13 – were injured.

The level crossing has neither a traffic light system nor barriers and was only secured by traffic signs. It is still unclear why the bus drove into the level crossing. The course of the accident was the subject of investigations.
