Wanted: A solo entertainer for two jobs

At the beginning of 2020, the Linz culture manager David Hemetsberger took over his dual function as managing director of the concert series “Musica Sacra” and “Upper Austrian Monastery Concerts”, which are run as associations. As a solo entertainer with voluntary accompaniment, he designed two annual programs at the height of the Corona pandemic.

One or the other detail sometimes remained unfinished. This was also criticized behind closed doors by club insiders. “There was often sand in the gears,” says an insider to the Upper Austrian news.

After a good three years, David Hemetsberger is leaving the traditional and popular concert format attached to the state’s Theater- und Orchester GmbH (TOG) on January 31, 2023. The 31-year-old, who has already held managerial positions in Grafenegg and at the Burg Gars Opera, will switch to a large cultural organization on February 1st. “This time, however, no longer with sole responsibility, but embedded in a larger network,” says Hemetsberger. A contract has not yet been signed, so he does not want to reveal his future role yet. From elsewhere it was learned that the former St. Florian Boys’ Choir would work “in the west of Germany” in the future.

Hemetsberger’s successor is still open, but it will definitely be male. The application period ended on October 15. “We had seven people interested in the position, and we’ll make a decision in November,” says Norbert Trawöger, artistic director of the Bruckner Orchestra.

Christine Haiden, Chairwoman of the Stiftskonzerte Association, wants to use the change in management to look at the structures with a salaried manager and volunteers: “This double function is very demanding. We have to see how we can support this in the future.”
