Xi Jingping re-elected as head of the Chinese Communist Party

Thus, at age 69, Xi Jinping has everything ready to be appointed as president of China for the third consecutive time, maintaining total political power in that country. In March 2023 will be the National People’s Assembly (the Chinese parliament) who will ratify him in the executive position.

The relevance of the election hinges on the fact that Xi broke with all the pre-established factors of election and political power in China. He is the most powerful president in that country since the figure of Mao Tse Tung.

at the party meetinga Standing Committee was also elected, the elite of the Chinese political elite, made up of seven members and all loyal to Xi. There are the president and the replacement for Prime Minister Li Keqiang, a defender of pro-market reforms and private enterprise.

On the way to renew the position of president in March 2023

Li Qiang, the secretary of the Shanghai party, was elected number two on the Standing Committee, who is thus on the verge of becoming prime minister, which is the position from which the economy is directed.

Zhao Leji, already a member of the Standing Committee, was promoted to the third commanding position, likely to head the National People’s Congress, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

Both positions, that of premier and president of Parliament, will be formally assigned during the National People’s Assembly in March 2023. The renewal of the leadership of the ruling communist party came at the close of a party congress that is held only twice a decade and that chose the 300 members of the Central Committee from among 3,200 delegates.

These 300 in turn elected the 25 members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, who appointed the Permanent Committee. As the Chinese leader begins his third term as head of his party, all eyes are focused on the economy of the Asian giant.

Economy, covid and conflict with the United States

After decades of unbridled growth, the country is now facing a severe slowdown, accentuated by an uncompromising “zero covid” policy, leading to many lockdowns.

This week, in a very unusual gesture, China delayed release of quarterly growth data without explanation. Although in recent years Xi has put the emphasis on consumption and domestic demand, the maintenance of sanitary restrictions makes this strategy difficult.

The party has inscribed for the first time in its statutes a mention of its “firm opposition” to Taiwan independence.

China considers this island of 23 million inhabitants as an integral part of its territory, although Taiwan has been governed by its own democratic government for more than 70 years. Tensions around the island increased with Washington after the visit in August of the US number three, Nancy Pelosi.

China considered that it was an affront to its sovereignty and soon after organized its largest military maneuvers around Taiwan.
