This is the conclusion of a recent study by British researchers led by Kat Petrilli from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Bath. For this they had evaluated data from 20 studies on this topic with almost 120,000 people.
As a result, people who use high-potency cannabis with high levels of THC are more likely to become addicted than people who use low-potency products. The same applies to the risk of developing a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia.
THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol – the main psychoactive substance cannabis contains. It docks onto certain receptors in the brain, among others, and increases the release of the reward neurotransmitter dopamine.
