In conversation with personalities from Wels

On the occasion of the 800th birthday of the city of Wels, ORF 2 will show the film essay “Stories of People and Houses” by film director Andreas Gruber tomorrow at 6:25 p.m. on the national holiday.

The filmmaker talks to different personalities who come from his home town of Wels and have moved into the world – such as the internationally successful conductor Franz Welser-Möst or the former ORF journalist, author and human rights activist Mathilde Schwabeneder.

Childhood memories of catfish

The interviewees, who have established themselves nationally and internationally, talk about what shaped them in their home town during their childhood and when it was time for them to go out into the world.

University professor and social ethicist Ingeborg Gabriel, jazz singer Lia Pale and writer and ORF presenter Günter Kaindlstorfer also talk about their childhood and youth in Wels in the film.

A lot has changed in Wels over the years. Gruber questions how sentimental looking back at one’s hometown can and should be. The cityscape has evolved, some things have disappeared and been replaced. A discussion about architectural and urban qualities develops in the film.

The stories are embedded and structured in the architecture of the city center. Film excerpts show Wels as a location for homeland films from the 1950s, but also from productions from the 1980s and 1990s.
