As reported, a tragic accident with a fatal outcome occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Ottensheim (district Urfahr area). 70-year-old Peter K. was out and about on his e-bike. When he came to the Niederottensheim level crossing, he crossed it despite the red light signal. The Ottensheimer was hit and run over by a trailer that was being pushed by a traction vehicle. He died later at the accident site.
The 70-year-old had not only been involved with the Red Cross in Ottensheim, but also in the district. “Not only the local office, but also the entire district is in shock,” says Peter Haslinger, district rescue commander from Urfahr-Surroundings.
Carried Red Cross in heart
“Our colleague has been an integral part of the local office for several years.” K. lived the slogan “For the love of people”. If a colleague got sick, he took over the job. And even so he was very active: not two days had passed in which he had not been on duty. He was an “integrative, highly valued and always in a good mood colleague”. “He had a deep friendly relationship with everyone and had an open ear for everyone.”
The accident victim’s colleagues are now being looked after by an established SvE team (stress management after stressful operations) in order to process the loss.
Use because of onlookers
The Ottensheim volunteer fire brigade also had to move out: “We were only called to action to provide visual protection,” says commander Josef Amtmann. Onlookers caused a traffic jam at the scene of the accident. This meant additional work for emergency services.
