A weekend afternoon trip to the cinema: back-row seats for a parent and a 12-year-old child, plus medium-sized popcorn and a pint of Coke. Based on this example, the consumer protection department of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor compared eleven cinemas across the state.
The price differences between the cheapest and the most expensive offer are high: while a visit to the cinema in Gmunden costs a total of 21.30 euros as described above, cinemagoers in the Braunau diesel cinema pay 33.30 euros – a whopping 12 euros more. According to the Chamber of Labour, there has been a price increase of 52 percent since the previous year.
Popcorn more expensive than tickets
In eight out of eleven of the cinemas selected, the total price is 23 euros or less. Next to the Diesel cinema in Braunau, a visit to the Cineplexx Linz with 27.30 euros and the Hollywood Megaplex in the Plus City (28.50 euros) is the most expensive.
In the Star Movie cinemas in Peuerbach, Regau, Ried, Wels and Steyr, the price for popcorn and coke is €7.90, which is higher than the cost of the tickets. They are the same for adults and a twelve-year-old child with 7.50 euros, as well as in the city cinema Gmunden (7.90 euros). At 14.50 euros, adults in the Diesel cinema in Braunau pay almost twice as much.
Film fans in the Cineplexx Linz pay the highest price for meals (medium popcorn and half a liter of coke) at 9.30 euros. In contrast, visitors to the Leone cinema in Bad Leonfelden or the Seewalchen miniplex save more than three euros at the cinema buffet with the same order.
Different price increase
In September 2021, the same offer in the Stadtkino Gmunden cost eight percent less, in the Star Movie cinemas it was four percent more expensive.
In the Cineplexx Linz, one of the more expensive cinemas, there was a small increase of 30 cents.
