Israel and Lebanon sealed a historic agreement

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Lebanese President Michel Aoun each signed the pact on their side, before an exchange of letters marked its formal conclusion.

The agreement eliminates the obstacles for the exploitation of gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean.

For Lapid, it is “a political achievement.” The Israeli Prime Minister also stressed that “it is not every day that an enemy State recognizes the State of Israel in a written agreement and this, in front of the entire international community.”

President Aoun responded in a tweet that it was a purely “technical” agreement, without any “political dimension” or “consequences that contradict Lebanon’s foreign policy.”

The head of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, also insisted that the pact was not “an international treaty” or a “recognition of Israel.” And after his signature, he announced the end of the “exceptional” military mobilization against Israel.

The approval of the pro-Iranian formation was key to the signing of the agreement. During the boreal summer he had threatened to attack Israel if it resorted to the reserves of the Karish field – partially claimed by Lebanon – before closing an agreement.
