“At 2:00 p.m., Al Shabaab terrorists carried out two explosions targeting civilians, including children, women and the elderly,” police spokesman Sadiq Doodishe said.
Doodishe said police would release the death toll and the number of injured later. The state-run SONNA news agency said the blasts had caused “dozens of civilian casualties, including independent journalist Mohamed Isse Kona.”
The Somali Journalists Union (SJS) confirmed that Kona, a television reporter, had died.
The first blast hit the ministry and the second came as ambulances were arriving and people were gathering to help the victims, police officer Nur Farah told Reuters.
Another policeman guarding the ministry, who identified himself as Hassan, told Reuters he saw at least 12 bodies and more than 20 people injured.
A Reuters reporter who was near the scene said the two blasts were felt within minutes of each other and shattered windows in the vicinity. The blood of the blast victims covered the asphalt just outside the building, he said.
