This reported the Weather page UWZ.at. On Sunday. The month that is drawing to a close was therefore around Austria-wide 3.3 degrees warmer than the average in the period from 1991-2020, in which, however, the effects of global warming were already measurable. According to the experts, October is already the eighth month that is too warm this year. It was particularly warm on average in the middle layers of the west with about 4 degrees above the mean, due to the fog the deviation was less pronounced in the lowlands of the east. Records were set right up to the end, with the past decade in October in particular showing exceptionally high temperatures, it was said.
More than 25 degrees at 1000 meters altitude
On Saturday in Sulzberg, Vorarlberg, the latest “summer day” was measured at over 1000 meters with a maximum temperature of 25.1 degrees. This was followed immediately on Sunday night at Kolomansberg, Salzburg (1113 metres) with a low temperature of 20.4 degrees, the latest “tropical night” in the history of measurements.
In general, the last few days of the month were characterized by exceptionally warm air masses from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, the meteorologists wrote. Away from the foggy areas, the maximum values in the remaining days were often between 20 and 24 degrees and thus about 10 to 14 degrees above the usual temperatures at this time of year. Even on the 3437 meter high Brunnenkogel in Tyrol, the highest weather station in the country, 5 degrees are currently being measured. There is still little to be seen of snow in the high alpine terrain. In Seefeld, also in Tyrol, about 7 to 8 frost days with a low temperature below zero degrees are common in October, not a single one has been recorded this month.
Far too little rain
October was also much too dry. Nationwide, only about two-thirds of the usual precipitation fell, although it was distributed very unevenly. The month was significantly too dry in the south and east of the country, with only 20 to 40 percent of the rain target being achieved in some areas. In Upper Austria, for example, it rained more than usual.
Persistent fog and high-fog layers did not become more frequent until the end of the month, and this was mainly in the east. Therefore, the sunshine target was reached or exceeded almost everywhere. According to the report, it was particularly sunny in the south and at medium altitudes in the east, where the sun should continue to shine for the remaining days.
