They acted because of “imminent danger”, said Deputy Mayor Gerhard Kroiß (FPÖ) on Tuesday. Because recently, due to the backlog when looking for accommodation, many more people than admitted were accommodated there, and around ten cases of diphtheria had also occurred – the OÖN reported.
There had been complaints from Wels for some time that the asylum registration office in the state police headquarters on Dragonerstraße was overcrowded because many refugees only had to wait there for a few hours instead of as planned until they were transferred to another quarter – although the appropriate sanitary and spatial equipment in the registration office is missing. There was talk of around 170 instead of the planned 100 people, and contagious diseases such as diphtheria have also recently occurred.
Transfer to St. Georgen
On Monday, therefore, the city carried out a building and fire inspection. As a consequence of the fire police inspection, a verbal notice was issued that from now on only up to 100 people may stay in the building. To relieve the burden, people are now being moved to St. Georgen im Attergau – although there are already tents here due to a lack of space – and to Tyrol, says Kroiß, but that is a matter for the Ministry of the Interior or the Federal Care Agency.
“It was the duty of the city of Wels to act and carry out an official inspection of the registration office,” emphasized Mayor Andreas Rabl (FPÖ), “if the requirements are not met within the specified period, there is a risk of closure”. Rabl and Kroiss reject the admission of additional asylum seekers or the opening of further asylum quarters.
As far as diphtheria cases are concerned, those affected and those closest to them were vaccinated in the hospital. The city of Wels offered the local employees the option of vaccination, said Kroiß.
Frankeburg defends itself against refugees
The market town of Frankenburg also resisted what they believed to be too many asylum seekers on Monday. In the federal care center in a Frankenburg factory building, “despite high fluctuation, 300 asylum seekers are housed throughout,” according to a broadcast. The municipality in the Vöcklabruck district, which has around 5,000 inhabitants, can only be expected to have a maximum of 100, according to their representatives in the municipal council. Therefore, a petition has now been launched, which OÖN have reported:
