Qatar rejected compensation funds for migrant workers

Human rights organizations had called on FIFA and Qatar to set up a $440 million fund for workers killed or injured working on World Cup construction sites. The sum corresponds to the prize money for the teams participating in the World Cup.

Human rights groups accuse Qatar of understating the total number of deaths at the World Cup construction sites. However, the government has firmly denied reports that thousands of migrant workers have died in accidents on the World Cup construction sites or from heat-related illnesses.

FIFA had previously stated that there was an “ongoing dialogue” about measures to benefit the construction workers. Marri said the plan could not be implemented. “Every death is a tragedy,” said the minister, but at the same time added that there were no criteria for setting up the fund: “Where are the victims? Do you have the names of the victims? How do you get these numbers?” Marri said.

At the same time, the Minister of Labor assured that the door was “open”. Qatar has already “processed and solved many cases”.
